What/Description: The CLEANFOREST webinar series is hosted by the COST Action’s Early Career Investigator community for all interested researchers and practitioners during the second and fourth week of every month.
For the next event in the series we will be joined by Marili Sell, Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences, University of Tartu, Estonia, to hear about their research:
Abstract: My research is focused on tree root ecology in response to environmental changes. The fine roots of trees are especially sensitive to environmental stimuli, changing the phenology, morphology, and even the functional distribution of fine roots. In Estonia we have an unique environmental manipulation experimental site similar to FACE, ours is called FAHM, where we increase air humidity around trees to see the effects of future climate conditions to the whole tree system. In the last years we have also conducted several growth chamber experiments to analyse only the effects of elevated air humidity on plant growth. In addition to the traditional manual root measurements such as washing and weighing, root imaging has becoming more introduced and advanced. In my recent research I have implemented smartphone imaging and machine-learning based methodologies to analyse those images and to estimate root growth dynamics and morphological changes of trees experiencing different air humidity and temperature treatments. In the growth chamber experiments we have used see-through boxes to see root growth and in the field experiments the minirhizotron cameras are usually used. In this webinar, I will report my STSM activities and show the outcomes of my recent research.
