Twenty-second webinar: Building a matrix of tree species, soil and management for climate and N mitigation potential

The CLEANFOREST webinar series is hosted by the COST Action’s Young Researchers community for all interested researchers and practitioners usually during the second and fourth week of every month. We are honored to announce that for the twenty-second event in the series, we will be joined by Lora Stoeva from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, one of the CLEANFOREST STSM Grantees. A short summary of her talk is given below.

As climate change accelerates and air pollution remains a persistent challenge, forests emerge as one of our most effective natural solutions. However, trees vary significantly in their response to environmental stressors. This talk delves into an analysis on how Europe’s main tree species differ in their ability to sequester carbon, improve air quality, and adapt to changing conditions across diverse soil types. By evaluating tree species suitability for current and future challenges, we can enhance forest resilience and maximize their role in climate mitigation strategies. During my talk I will present the current status and progress of the review on the distribution, habitat, usage and threats of selected tree species across Europe as well as any possibilities to contribute to the finalization of the study. This analysis is part of the work of CLEANFOREST Working group 3 and it was developed during a Short-Term Scientific Mission to Elena Vanguelova’s lab at Forest Research, UK. The objective of collating tree species data on their ecological requirements is to contribute to the creation of a white paper or guidance document that offers strategic recommendations for forest management. These recommendations are intended to guide reforestation and afforestation projects, in addition to climate-smart forestry practices.
