Seventeenth webinar: Finalizing the literature review database for tree-ring based water use efficiency estimates and performing first analyses

Date and time: 12th December 2024; 10:00 – 10:45 AM (CET)

The CLEANFOREST webinar series is hosted by the COST Action’s Young Researchers community for all interested researchers and practitioners usually during the second and fourth week of every month.

We are honored to announce that for the Seventeenth event in the series we will be joined by Paulina Puchi, one of the CLEANFOREST STSM Grantees. The short summary of her talk is given below.

During my STSM at WSL in July 2024, I focused on finalizing a comprehensive database of tree-ring-based water use efficiency (WUE) estimates and conducting preliminary analyses. This work involved completing missing data entries in the literature review database, standardizing coordinates, and generating spatial distribution maps to represent WUE trends. Analyses covered trends in European forest WUE from 1990 onwards, identifying regions with neutral, increasing, or decreasing patterns. Our findings indicate a general increase in WUE across Europe, while also highlighting areas where additional data collection is required to fill existing knowledge gaps.

I also engaged in field sampling at the Laegeren site, where we sampled 15 Fagus sylvatica trees adjacent to an eddy covariance tower, thereby extending the Tree Ring Width (TRW) chronology to encompass 2013–2023. In WSL’s laboratory, I acquired and applied cellulose extraction methodologies to prepare samples for carbon and stable isotope analysis, to a better comprehension of WUE processing and analysis.

This STSM successfully established an accurate WUE database and generated spatial analyses that contribute directly to Action objectives and support ongoing research. Furthermore, a collaborative network with Marco Lehmann, Stefan Klesse, and Matthias Saurer will involve a comprehensive analysis of carbon within tree rings at Laegeren, integrating quantitative wood anatomy and atmospheric carbon measurements. This initiative aims to advance insights into WUE dynamics and carbon allocation processes in forest ecosystems.
