Twenty-eighth webinar – From Tissue to Tree: Calibrating Canopy Wood Volume and Leaf Area Against Branch-level Measurements using Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Twenty-eighth webinar – From Tissue to Tree: Calibrating Canopy Wood Volume and Leaf Area Against Branch-level Measurements using Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Date and time: 26th September 2025; 1:00 – 1:45 PM (CET) – Drone4Tree: An option to process large-scale UAV raw data for forest applications

The CLEANFOREST webinar series is hosted by COST Action’s Young Researchers community for all interested researchers and practitioners, usually during the second and fourth week of every month. We are honored to announce that for the twenty-sixth event in the series, we will be joined by Ulf Mallast from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH – UFZ, Leipzig, Germany. A short summary of his talk is given below.

The CLEANFOREST webinar series is hosted by COST Action’s Young Researchers community for all interested researchers and practitioners, usually during the second and fourth week of every month. We are honored to announce that for the twenty-eighth event in the series, we will be joined by Laura Stewart from the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF), Spain, one of the CLEANFOREST STSM Grantees. A short summary of her talk is given below.

Terrestrial laser scanning is a powerful technology capable of capturing tree allometry to a resolution of millimetres which has unlocked the ability to characterise tree-level canopy structure in unprecedented detail. However, a major challenge remains in accurately extracting canopy-level parameters such as total branch volume and leaf area from the 3D scans.

In this study, 36 individuals of Quercus ilex, Quercus pubescens and Pinus halepensis were scanned at our experimental site in Collserola Natural Park, Barcelona. 15 branches were sampled per species and total branch volume and leaf area were measured in the laboratory. The branches were segmented from the 3D scans, calibrated against their laboratory measurements and the estimates were upscaled to the canopy. Having performed the calibration at a species-level, the estimates could be extrapolated to scans of other individuals of the same species without having to perform further destructive sampling.
